چکیده

We present high-precision V , B − V color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) for the classic second parameter globular clusters M3 and M13 from wide-field deep CCD photometry. The data for the two clusters were obtained during the same photometric nights with the same instrument, allowing us to determine accurate relative ages. Based on a differential comparison of the CMDs using the ∆(B − V ) method, an age difference of 1.7 ± 0.7 Gyr is obtained between these two clusters. We compare this result with our updated horizontal-branch (HB) population models, which confirm that the observed age difference can produce the difference in HB morphology between the clusters. This provides further evidence that age is the dominant second parameter that influences HB morphology. Subject headings: color-magnitude diagrams — globular clusters: individual (M3, M13) — stars: evolution — stars: horizontal-branch Data were obtained using the 2.4 m Hiltner Telescope of the Michigan-Dartmouth-M.I.T. (MDM) Observatory. Visiting Astronomer, MDM Observatory.

Horizontal-Branch Morphology as an Age Indicator

We present our recent revision of model constructions for the horizontal-branch (HB) morphology of globular clusters, which suggests the HB morphology is more sensitive to age compared to our earlier models. We also present our high precision CCD photometry for the classic second parameter pair M3 and M13. The relative age dating based on this photometry indicates that M13 is indeed older than ...

Globular Cluster Ages and Strömgren CCD Photometry

Strömgren uvby CCD photometry can be used in a variety of ways to constrain the absolute and relative ages of globular clusters. The reddening corrected v−y, c1 diagram offers the means to derive ages that are completely independent of distance. Very precise differential ages for clusters of the same chemical composition may also be determined from such 2–color plots, or from measurements of th...

Globular Cluster Candidates in NGC 891 1

We use deep images taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope of the disk galaxy NGC 891, to search for globular cluster candidates. This galaxy has long been considered to be a close analog in size and structure to the Milky Way and is nearly edge-on, facilitating studies of its halo population. These extraplanar ACS images, originally intended to study the ...

Horizontal-branch Models and the Second-parameter Effect. Iii. the Impact of Mass Loss on the Red Giant Branch, and the Case of M5 and Palomar 4/eridanus

Deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry has recently been presented for the outer-halo globular clusters Palomar 4 and Eridanus. The new high-precision color-magnitude diagrams obtained for these globulars have allowed a measurement of their ages relative to M5 (NGC 5904), which is a wellobserved, much closer cluster. Assuming that the globular clusters share the same chemical composition,...

A Survey of M 31 Globular Clusters using WFPC 2 on board HST

We report new, as yet unpublished HST/WFPC2 V, I pho-tometry of 9 globular clusters in M31. These are part of a total sample of 19 clusters on M31 with well observed CMDs from HST. The clusters have the full range of horizontal branch morphologies from blue HB to red clump, but none are found with an extreme (blue only) horizontal branch. Plots of HB type vs [Fe/H] are similar to those of Galac...
